The JCAHO standards create new expectations for pain management and explicitly acknowledge that pain is a co-existing condition of a number of diseases and injuries. Accredited organizations will be called upon to demonstrate the following:
Recognize the rights of patients to appropriate assessment and management of pain;
Assess the existence and, if present, the nature and intensity of pain in all patients;
