All Outpatient Surgery RNs will be inserviced on the correct use and maintenance of the pneumatic tourniquets before use.
The safe and proper use of pneumatic tourniquets will be a competency assessment for all Outpatient Surgery RNs annually.
Tourniquets shall be inflated with nitrogen or air, according to manufacturer's instructions. Nitrous oxygen or oxygen shall NOT be used to inflate tourniquets.
PROCEDURE:
The Outpatient Surgery RN will:
Inspect the pneumatic tourniquet before use
Inspect cuff and tubing for any cracks of leaks.
Ensure all connections are secure.

Upper extremity - one 1 hour
Lower extremity - one and one-half to two 1 1/2 - 2 hours
Once the tourniquet is turned off and there is reperfusion of the extremity for at least 10 minutes, the tourniquet may be re-inflated for the times stated above.
Deflate the tourniquet, per manufacturer's instructions.
When using bilateral extremity tourniquets, the tourniquets should be deflated individually, 30-45 minutes apart.
Remove the cuff and any padding as soon as possible.
