The physician will write an order 24-48 hours in advance of the transfusion.
The order must state the type and number of blood components the patient is to receive and the length of time over which each unit shall be administered.
Patient will have a pretransfusion hemoglobin and hematocrit performed for physician information.
A copy of the order is sent to the facility; the original order is sent to the blood bank.
The patient has a blood sample drawn for type and crossmatch 24-48 hours in advance either by the facility or the Clinical Laboratory.
