Capillary blood gasses will be obtained to assess adequacy of oxygenation and ventilation, per physician's order, on infants who do not have arterial line access.
EQUIPMENT:
Alcohol swabs
Band-Aid
Betadine swabs
Exam gloves
Heparinized capillary tubes with caps, as needed
Lancet
PROCEDURE:
Fill out requisition and notify Respiratory Therapy Department.
Warm heel prior to procedure for 10 to 15 minutes.
Cleanse site lateral and medial posterior surface only with alcohol and pierce with lancet.
Collect blood in capillary tube making sure there are no air bubbles present. ... |
