To provide guidelines for the appropriate assessment of suicide risk and response to prevent suicide.
POLICY:
The Hospice concept affirms life. Helping people who are experiencing an advanced life-threatening illness does this, with the goal of improving the quality of their life. Hospice will provide care aimed at preventing suicide for patients who express suicidal ideation or intentions.
PROCEDURE:
Hospice personnel must immediately report information to the manager or designee when any patient:
Talks of suicide
Attempts suicide
Commits suicide

| | ...Listen. Do not try to belittle the person's feelings or agree with what he/she is saying.
Do not argue about plans.
Do try to get the person to contract with you promise or agree that he/she will always call you and allow you to try to help before he/she would ever take actions. Be careful not to promise what you cannot deliver.
Help the person develop appropriate coping skills.
Help develop a network of social and/or spiritual support.
Be available and be alert and ready to respond... |
