To delineate guidelines for the Hospice RN to follow in the event of anaphylaxis reaction.
POLICY:
The Hospice RN may administer medications for emergency use in the event of anaphylactic reaction when administering IV medications. Medications must be given according to a physician's order.
DEFINITION:
Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis:
Respiratory distress: dyspnea, wheezing, choking, cyanosis
Dermatologic changes: urticaria, erythema, angioedema, pruritus
Gastrointestinal complaints: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea

Have telephone number of paramedics available use 911, if appropriate.
Have all ordered anaphylaxis medications within reach.
During IV medication administration:
Stop flow of drug.
Evaluate signs and symptoms rapidly.
Administer medications for anaphylaxis according to physician orders and described directions.
Notify paramedics use 911, if appropriate.
Notify physician and follow orders received.
