To maintain catheter sterility and to prevent migration of the tip, dressing changes shall be done 24 hours post insertion, then weekly and as needed.
Very active clients or those who perspire profusely will need dressing changes more frequently. Because the insertion site is also the site of access to the venous system, sterile technique shall be used in dressing changes.
EQUIPMENT:
Dressing kits:
One 1 5 cm x 7 cm transparent dressing
Three 3 alcohol swabsticks
Three 3 antimicrobial swabsticks Povidone
Steri-strips
Skin prep swab

Assess insertion site for signs and symptoms of infection and notify physician if present.
Remove gloves and apply sterile gloves.
First, clean site with three 3 alcohol applicators separately in a circular fashion starting from insertion site and working outwards to at least 2-4 inches from site. Apply friction for at least 30 seconds. Allow to air dry. DO NOT BLOT.
Repeat using three 3 antimicrobial applicators. Allow to air dry. DO NOT BLOT.
