It is the policy of Hospital Cardiopulmonary Services to provide incentive spirometry as ordered by a patient's physician.
When a physician's order for incentive spirometry is received, it shall be sent to Cardiopulmonary Services to be charged and started by a member of Cardiopulmonary Services or Nursing.
Patients shall be encouraged to use the incentive spirometer five 5 to 10 breaths per session, at a minimum every hour while awake.
Incentive spirometers are single-use items. The patient's name will be written on his/her individual incentive spirometer.
