Cuff pressures are monitored every shift on all endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes to:
Prevent tracheal wall complications
Ensure a proper seal to prevent aspiration and provide adequate ventilation
EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES:
Stopcock
Syringe, 5 mL
Respiratory pressure manometer
PROCEDURE:
Suction the patient both endotracheally and oropharyngeally.
Attach the stopcock/syringe to the valve on the balloon with the stopcock in the off to patient position.
Fill the manometer to the previously documented cuff pressure by injecting air via syringe into the manometer.
