Nursing Leadership for Behavioral Health Units

Question:

Do CMS and/or Joint Commission require that there be a Director of Nursing for a Behavioral Health Unit or can you have a Nurse Manager instead for the supervision of nursing staff?

Answer:

CMS Regulations for Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals requires the hospital or unit has a qualified director of psychiatric nursing services.  The Director of Psychiatric Nursing Services must be an RN who has a master's degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing or be qualified by education and experience in the care of the mentally ill.
